I might’ve been a strange kid growing up. My parents never had cable, I was an only child, and my biggest forms of entertainment were cartoons either purchased or recorded on VHS. My father put a lot of effort into recording cartoons on TV, and even went out of his way to ensure that I experienced some really old school culture like Charlie Chaplin, The Three Stooges, and Betty Boop.
One of my all time favorites was Popeye. I can still remember the bubble letter credits and hear the tooting whistle in the intro music now. I admit, I’d forgotten about it as I grew older in spite of my fierce love for older culture versus what’s on TV now, and it wasn’t until I saw a trailer of Genndy’s Tartakovsky’s Popeye animation test on youtube - that it all came rushing back to me.
I have to say, I am absolutely ecstatic over this trailer! I know it’s not related to what will end up being a final feature, but just the spirit of it is all I could ever ask for. I’m so glad that 3D animation seems to have been returning closer to it’s 2D roots in recent years - the moments of anticipation, the old school humor and the extremely exaggerated characters - love! ( Spoiler alert, but I love Olive Oil and her rubberband fling at the end! )
I’m aware that Popeye is something that for most people my age, it’s way before my generation, dating back to the 1920’s in comic form before cartoons started in the 1930’s. It’s a bit odd when you realize that you watched the same cartoons as your father did - and at the same time, I’m really happy that I was exposed to great things like Popeye as a kid ( thanks, dad!).
I can’t wait until the final feature. In the meantime, I hope that everyone will enjoy this animation test just as much as I did. Have a happy Wednesday.
